The Basilica di Nostra Signora di Bonaria in Cagliari.

Situated on a hill which stands out in front of the ancient Castle, Basilica di Nostra Signora di Bonaria was completed in 1926 after about two centuries of exhausting work. Unfortunately not long after, reported damage was caused by explosions during the war, which stripped frescos of great value, stucco work and gilded ornaments. The Basilica di Nostra Signora di Bonaria was part of a larger monumental camp, which counted, together with the church, an adjacent sanctuary and convent of the Mercedari fathers, all built on a land where in 1324 King Alphonso of Aragon disposed his army in waiting to attack and conquest Cagliari; after the victory he decided to build a fortified castle and the above-mentioned church in these places, which date back to 1335 to the Order of the Brothers of Nostra Signora of Mercede where they arranged a convent.
The sanctuary actually guests the sacred image of Madonna di Bonaria, sculptured in carob wood and from which the basilica takes its name.  As the myth says, it docked suddenly on the Cagliari coasts in 1370, and later it was discovered that it belonged to the Catalan works of the 15th Century.
