Duomo of Cagliari
The duomo of Cagliari is situated in the very central Piazza Carlo Alberto, not far from the celebrated Piazza Palazzo, in the centre of the Castle area.
Inaugurated with the benediction of Santa Maria, it was implied in a manner of saying, a little striking entering the columned Bastion of Saint -Remy, according to the Pisan artistic scheme which was seen to come to light.
The duomo was completed to the threshold of the 13th Century but was modified between 1669 and 1674, in virtue of the predilection for the innovative Baroque art. Actually withstanding to the original structure of the church, the square bell tower, the ancient lintels of the central main door and the lateral doors of the transept; in fact the facade in Baroque style was modified during 1931 to bring it back to its original features, in base of the ancient Roman-Pisan-Lucchese plans.
Moving to the inside of the Duomo of Cagliari we note a succession of three naves, entirely covered in polychrome marble, which hosts in the middle a precious Black Madonna of1300 sculptured in gilded wood, beside an important pulpit, projected at the start during 1159 and 1162 by Guglielmo of Pisa to donate to the town but was then sent in 1312 to Cagliari as a present from the Tuscan town. Interestingly presented is the Aula Capitolare, in which important collections of cloths of outstanding making are preserved, for example Cristo Flagellato possibly made by Guido Reni.
