San Saturnino

San Saturnino is the oldest church in Cagliari dedicated to its martyr and is a beautiful example of Byzantine and proto-Romanesque style, one of the most fascinating monuments of Cagliari.

It is located in Piazza San Cosimo and was originally created to commemorate the Martyr Saturno, celebrated in Cagliari on the 30th October and whose relics are preserved in the Cathedral of Cagliari.

Traces of the presence of a place of worship date back to the 5th century BC but the final architecture of the church is due to the monks Vittorini of Marseilles that arrived in Cagliari in 1089.
